Observe just a few key points and you can basically set the aquarium in any way you want with happy fish living inside!
1. Water must be clean. Do one one-third water change twice a week with clean tap water stored overnight. Do not skip a partial water change. Clear water is not necessarily clean water.
2. Observe the space requirements. In general, keep only one killifish per 3 liter of water. Fish shop usually put many fish in one tank but you are not running a fish shop. Your task is to keep the fish healthy and happy.
3. NO detergent or chemicals. Check if the soil or peat moss you bought has any chemical or nutrient added before putting them in the water. Wash your aquarium and related items with water and salt only. Do not use water bucket with even a minor trace of detergent.
4. There should not be any sudden change in water quality. They will live a much shorter live if that happened to them. Keep the temperature and other water qualities like acidity relatively stable. Do a slow water match before releasing fish into a new environment. Suppose you are back from the fish shop with your fish in a bag. Do not introduce them in your aquarium. Instead, match the water!

Open and hang the bag in front of the aquarium that you intend to put them in. If the water in the aquarium is different from the room temperature, hang with part of the bag in the water as well for a temperature match. Now add water from the aquarium to the bag. Amount of water to add is about one third of the amount of water already in the bag. Wait 30 minutes and add the same proportion of water from the aquarium again. Repeat the step 3 more times. Discard part of the water in the bag if necessary if it became too full. Close the bag opening after each addition of water to avoid fish jumping right out. The whole water matching process will take two and a half hours if you remember to do every step on time. Do not start water matching very late at night or else you will have to go to bed very late.
Finally, scoop the fish into your aquarium. Discard all water in the bag as a preventive measure against possible disease from the seller’s water. Some buyers will even put their newly arrived fish into quarantine tanks for the best possible protection of their existing fish. Do that if your resources allow.
5. For most killifish species, keep the water between 10-30 degree C or 50-86 degree F. Adjust to meet species-specific temperature if your resources allow.
6. Put a lid on. Or cover up with a fine net. Some killifish species really like jumping out when you are not around.
With the keys observed, you can decorate your aquarium in any way you want. The followings are some examples.
